This ornament belongs to a friend who has had it for many year and has no history of it. I wondered if anyone can give any information of how old it might be and it’s origin.

Great piece!
you see the MINNIE MOUSE hairstyle, it is related to knicked chinese / japanese term KARAKO ( chinese child ) originally called KESHI = poppy or YAKKO = lad
When you see an KARAKO they are never pissed or in a bad mood mostly an juvenile homo ludens scene ( somethies with BUddha or Ebisu) ( butterfly chasers play etc )
During the premodern period ( EDO) children got defined as ( translation from Japanese children from the valuables
so you have to portray them as vulnerable and nice, and the religious side effect it is easier to return to BUddha and the gods, and it enhances attachment
it sounds as a bull s,,, fairy tale actually it aint , psychological research affirms the bondage between babies ,cuteness as a sort sort of primordial attachment theory
the further origine is probably is coming from the HIKKO , copying chinese TANg dynasty ( woodblock prints IMO)
WHat is it , it is , it is an OKIMOMO ( decorative artifact) so it is not an NETSEKU( himotoshi are missing)
it is not ivory the Shregerlines lines are missing Hard to say what it is precisly ( celloloid , polymere ?)
NOwadays they are made all around the world ( even in Italy) still remains Japanese probably in stead of chinese
IMO it is not so valuable , the SUMI (the black paint is off and rather shallow, and it is not signed and the SUMI is ON the folds
So i think it is quite knew something like 1970
still very cute
Apostata, thank you for all of the information. It is all very interesting.
