Iga style vase by Makuzu II. Approximate date 1926-1940.
”Hanzan was also directly involved in an attempt to revive ko-Iga ware. In 1921 the politician and tea enthusiast Kawasaki Katsu (1880-1949) began with tea master Takahashi Soan ?????1861-1937)
to revive the ko-Iga kilns at his home-town of Iga-Uno, in Mie prefecture. He invited Hanzan to help build an authentic Momoyama-type noborigama kiln and to supervise the initial making and firing processes. Kawasaki's choice of Hanzan as technical adviser may have been partly due to the fact that Iga-style stonewares were already an established part of Hanzan's repertoire”. From Master potter of Meiji Japan.
What is the purpose and technique behind the crack like joint through the body? It's clealy purpose made. So interesting.
It’s high relief. Not sure what was his intention. ??
