Like Mr. Toad from the Wind in the Willows, some new thingamajig chuggs by, mesmerizes me, and becomes my obsession. This time round it is mid century bar glassware. Fred Press designed these highball glasses in the 1950s or 60s. He was a renowned sculptor, painter, and the chief designer for Rubel & Co., which specialized in glassware and giftware. Some collectors have labeled this pattern eclipse, starburst, or celestial. Press, like other first rate glass designers such as Georges Briard, Culver Glass Company, and Ceraglass, used 22k gold in his designs. That is why these glasses light up a room.
