Oil Signs
Texaco - 12"
Winner- 11" x 2 3/8"
Picked these up recently. The Texaco is a newer reproduction piece, but will look good in the garage. The other sign is from an oil station in Winner South Dakota. Still researching and haven't found anything about this oil station.
**UPDATE** While doing some searching on the internet, I found a person near this area with the same last name and I was able to contact him. Turns out his grandfather Albert had this gas station in the 1930s. And interestingly another relative worked in Washington state for Boeing, which could explain how the sign ended up in our area. I believe in keeping family history and we are in talks of working something out..maybe a possible trade?**
The Vintage Carousel gumball machine is part of my garage art, full of used spark plugs from my 1964 C10. After posting I looked at my machine a little closer. This is the KING model(15"). Has the Carousel sticker on the back with serial number and federal compliance sticker on the bottom(that tells me it was a commercially used piece)
CAROUSEL NOT CAROSEL
"The Carousel brand gumball machine was originally created by Arthur Gold of Carousel Industries (frequently misspelled as Carosel Industries) in the 1950's and has been an American favorite since."
WE HAVE A WINNER!
"Winner was so named because it was the “winner” in the struggle to establish a town along the railroad right-of-way when the Chicago North Western began moving west from Dallas, SD in 1909"
SECOND PLACE - NO WINNER
"At first Lamro, which was then the county seat, was believed to have the best chance but the railroad survey missed the established township by only two miles and immediately a new town originated and was given the name Winner."
ABE & THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE
"Winner was part of the famous Louisiana Purchase of 1803, and later part of the Dakota Territory, established by an act of Congress and a proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861."
HIGHWAY 18
"U.S. Route 18 is an east–west U.S. highway in the Midwestern United States. The western terminus is in Orin, Wyoming at an interchange with Interstate 25. Its eastern terminus is in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin."
