I had a super excursion to Sydney yesterday, & picked up a couple of nice finds before viewing the 45th Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras parade.
This is the first of my finds, a really cute little Burmese glass novelty item - a top hat.
It is made from opaque custard glass which shades to an intense salmon pink. Burmese glass contains uranium & glows green under UV light. The top hat measures 7.5 cm high at the tallest point, 9 cm wide across the top rim, & 5.5 cm across the base, which has a neatly polished out pontil mark. It has the rarely seen glossy finish rather than the classic satin finish of most Burmese glass.
In perfect condition.
I think this may be by Thomas Webb & Sons.
Lovely..
Many thanks, Penny!
Beautiful glass top hat!! I have many antique top hats in my collection, so you could say that I do love top hats!!
Great color transition! Love me some Burmese glass...
Thanks also, Scott!
Much appreciated, kwqd!
I have admired this Webb's Burmese shape for a long time and hope that I might come across something similar too!
Many thanks, Russell117!
I think top hat vases were quite a thing at one time. I bet it makes its presence felt on the shelf.
.
Absolutely, Peggy, this is definitely small but snazzy - it is now at the front of my Burmese shelf hogging all the limelight!
