This Japanese handmade and painted condiment set has a tray that is 6.75" square x 6.5" high. The small pot (toothpick?) is 2" high x 2.5" diameter, the salt and pepper shakers are 3" high x 1.5" diameter, and the sauce pot is 2.5" high and 3" in diameter, minus the spout. The sauce pot and small pot are marked with a couple of Japanese characters on the bottom.

This was a surprising find. It appears to be a blend of Japanese culture (sauce pot, small pot and tray) and Western culture (salt and pepper shakers). There may have been another piece, perhaps a spoon for the small pot, as there was a chip of glazed material the same color as the small pot, in the tray. There is not much room in the tray for anything else, so it had to be a fairly small item. Perhaps a lid or spoon for the small container?

Thrift shop find yesterday. Possibly by Fujio Kitade, well known Kutani potter?

It's interesting that Japanese people adopted the whole Western cruet idea, I see it a bit in glass too.
This is so very Japanese, a beautiful set, handmade, to be used every day.

Thanks for your comments, Karen! I suspect that the Japanese probably developed the sauce pot independently of the European cruet.
