Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company 25 Years Service Medal. 14k Gold, (8.04 grams in weight) made by Whithead and Hoag of Newark, New Jersey as marked on the edge. At the widest point this oval medal is 22.5 mm wide. Named to John Allen who joined the company in November of 1892 meaning that this medal should have been issued in 1917-1918. The company was founded in 1866 when deadly steam boiler explosions were frequent occurrences. The obverse features an old wood burning rail road locomotive circa 1865. The company is still in business today.
As an aside, this is one of two medals that I once offered for sale during a momentary weakness. Thank God no one bought them at that time.
