i've had this on my wall for about a year and i do use it occasionally. It's in perfect condition, so probably was never used much. Nice assymetrical etching. Lidded box for polish and two brushes on hooks. Very nice laminate wood. Probably 1920s-30s?
Interesting, I don't think the brushes were for polishing shoes, it used to be very common to brush the hat and coat before going out, as dust and soot would fall on them .....
I agree with the previous comment.
Maybe someone would have kept a shoe brush and polish there but I think it’s primary purpose was for brushing lint (and dandruff) off one’s clothing and checking one’s appearance prior to leaving the house.
It would seem that using shoe polish in the vestibule of the house would leave residue to be tracked onto the rugs….that would send ME into a frenzy and have me on the warpath against the guy with shiny shoes!
thank you kiva and Watch! it never dawned on me, but it makes perfect sense! there is NO residue whatsoever on these very stiff bristles. but then again, i don't think anyone has ever used it for anything. no scratches, no stains or ANYTHING! i'm really not used to old things in such perfect condition.
i wonder why one of the brushes is so much wider than the other? that is the only difference between them that i can detect. maybe one is for hats and the other is for coats?
