One of the prizes in a large grouping recently purchased.
I own several Damascus trench art shells, but this is the first with Persian motifs. The stylized animals and trees look like they came from a fine silk rug or tapestry.
The piece looks to have been originally intended as a lamp, but doesn’t appear to have been finished or it was disassembled ages ago. There are fine cracks on it— the heavy weight of the projectile may have caused this and necessitated removal of lamp parts.
At any rate, it is certainly rare in any form and will be displayed on its side to reduce the possibility of further damage.
My photos of my trench art— don’t reproduce in any form without permission.
