This Japanese or Chinese Satsuma egg is about 6.5" high x 5" widest diameter and is hollow. Not signed, no markings. It is fairly thick pottery with a design which I find on other examples described as Satsuma, but not certain about this! The same design is on both sides, and both ends, so not sure if it is hand painted or transfer ware. I will take a look when my eyes are not so tired. No idea which kiln made this egg or if it is Japanese or Chinese. I found marked examples made in both countries.

It is still very dirty, heavily stained with tobacco smoke, but I managed to get it somewhat presentable with some soapy water and paper towels. Much of the gold decoration was dull before that.

Found at the thrift shop where I found my rice eyes bowl and Hopi pot. It was in a line of a so so Japanese pottery tea set and several Japanese figurines, which I never see there. Tea seat was Mingei, not bad but numerous chips and way (WAY) overpriced as were the figurines which were quite small but still very nice. Pass and pass. Then I saw this, and it was only $4. As we say here, "Schwing!".

This shop is one of those Christian charity thrift shops where Christian music is blaring and a variety of odd types staff the place. The lady who checked me out was quite high, I think, and first dropped this egg from chest high onto the floor which is a concrete slab covered by indoor/outdoor carpeting and then bent to pick it up and kicked it about six feet onto the bottom shelf of a set of wood shelving. OK, then...... There was no sound of breaking pottery and she very quickly stuffed it into a used plastic grocery store bag. I let it slide but gave it a close examination in my car and did not see any damage.

At the next store, I found two of the wooden display stands (Made in Hong Kong by CP Co.) these eggs typically sit on for $2.59. Apparently, Fate has decided that this egg will accompany me on my journey through life......

Tried to get some decent images but it is night here and the moonlight got in my eyes. May try again..
