Another GW find from last Summer. Being near Oberlin College some interesting items occasionally drift in and out of the thrifts. The Allen Art Museum is also on the campus. So sometimes something like this drawing shows up and catches my eye. What's odd here is this portrait looks very similar to the artist Rene' Magritte's face in his "Clairvoyance" self portrait painted in 1936. Of course here he's younger but the similarity is striking. Magritte is famous for his faceless floating "Bowler" hat portraits. The label on the back is dated 1936 but it says 19yrs. He would have been 38 in 1936 when "Clairvoyance" was painted. Possibly done from a younger photo which do exist. Finally, the signature looks a lot like Picasso to me. So am I imagining all these similarities or do you see them too ? -Mike-
