At three inches across this is a rather small abalone shell but it is colorful. The sign in the last photo says it all and I need to get the shells in the bin next to it.
I used to order abalone at seafood restaurants in the long ago but not sure if it available anymore. I like the seafood platters better anyway with the shrimp, clams, scallops, squid and so on. With extra cocktail sauce. I lioke crab but it takes to much effort. Haven't had a decent lobster lately and I could go for that. When I do eat seafood I like to be at a place on or near the ocean. Even if the food is flown in from far away. I am not that sophisticated although I do know how to order food at a restaurant. Do not order prime rib at a BBQ place. No don't get the salmon either. Also pop for the extra 3-5 bucks for something other than water. I am a little sophisticated at least.
I seem to have gone on a tangent but it needed to be said.

Well now I'm craving seafood! As a person from a fishing family in Alaska, I have been lucky growing up with a constant and varied fresh wild seafood supply, as there were different species being harvested depending on the season and which branch of the family was pursuing what. Abalone in my home state was at one point almost wiped out by commercial harvesting, but we had it sometimes, usually gathering it at extreme low tides, unless someone in the family was running a sea cucumber diving boat, then the divers would get some, and the restaurant I was a server at had it on the menu in the late 80s, until it was prohibited. Always liked mine fried, as opposed to in a chowder. Anyway, that she'll is beautiful, love the soft seafood tint! Thanks for igniting old memories!

Abalone is a big industry around Eden in southern NSW.
The licences are very tightly held, are worth a lot of money, and no-one else is allowed to dive for them. Except the local indigenous group is allowed, on occasion, to get a few of what they used to live big on.
Most shellfish makes me swell up alarmingly. Had to be said.

Thank you very much Newfld. There's a place on the Redondo Pier I want to go to...

Thank you very much Faith. Abalone was huge in Morro Bay. Now the otters feast on very expensive sea food.

Thank you very much racer4four. This is from around there. Just watch out for sea otters.
