Finally found the artist of this piece. After intense research it looks to me to be made by Lila De Nobili. Who was an Italian stage designer, costume designer, and fashion illustrator. She was noted for her collaborations with leading stage and opera directors such as Luchino Visconti and Franco Zeffirelli, as well as her early work on fashion illustration at French Vogue magazine.
In Paris from 1943, De Nobili began doing illustrations of the haute couture collections for various magazines, especially French Vogue. She also did illustrations for Hermès and created adverts for fragrances by Lucien Lelong and she created publicity drawings for Elsa Schiaparelli, Lanvin, Pierre Balmain and Marcel Rochas.
Copy paste info sure but interesting stuff. This piece came from a storage unit auction owned by an old fine art collector and dealer. It’s the same unit the Pierre Jules Mene bronze came from. The subject of this painting is very haunting. Ghostly figures completely covered by white cloth. The Notre Dame cathedral off in the distance. The piece is signed Nobili and measures 15 1/4” x 13 1/8” on Sennelier canvas board. Condition is quite rough, the wood is warped, the paint is chipped in areas, and has some stains. But still very nice to find out this piece.
