      This is the best advice you can get..if you don't know, don't do it! There are 3 types of cases.. (1) screw on (2) hinged (3) snap on back.

      If you mess up a screw on case, you have devalued your watch.

      Call around and find a jewelry store, antique store or pawn shop that deals in pocket watches. They will most likely open it for free. Once open, you will know how to close it safely.

      I did this recently with a pocket watch I aquired..they didn't charge me a dime.
