This is another find from an excursion to my favourite inner Sydney suburb, Newtown. I've found many interesting items there over the years. It is one of the few suburbs left that still has several reliable sources of well - priced bric - a - brac, as well as a funky, alternative vibe that suits me perfectly!
I had a vase very similar to this which I sold in 2015, & that I ended up regretting. This type of vase is typically found in two sizes, & this larger one is seldom seen. It is made from two layers of cased glass, clear over a spatter of red, white & green, with an applied cobalt blue coil. The vase measures 29.5 cm tall, 4.4 cm across the top rim, & 6 cm across the four sided base.
I have six other versions of this vase in the smaller size, in various spatter combinations.
Czech origin, 1920s - 30s era.
Nice vase!
Newtown has been battling gentrification a long time, I hope it never loses that battle.
I've been working weekends lately so haven't got to the markets for a while. I hope to catch up soon.
Many thanks, Karen - & I totally agree with your sentiments about Newtown...I hope that at least some of it can remain forever funky!
And hope to catch up soon as well...
I can't see from the images but there may be two fine, low relief ribs running from each foot to the rim. If so it's Welz. I have a collection of them too :)
Much appreciated, Peggy - this is really interesting to find out!
Oh, what a beauty!!
Many thanks, Scott!
