I found this nice Japanese incense burner today. There is a piece of tape on the bottom which has '1900' and 4 kanji written on it. It has a foo dog top and some interesting unglazed, almost toasted portions. I'm not sure what that is called. It comes in two pieces and is in excellent condition. I think that it is from Hirado - due to the very glossy glaze and the openwork, but i'm not absolutely certain. Can anyone make out the kanji on the tape?

I just noticed that this is the 5001st item i've posted here.

i found another with stained biscuit. The three boys in the stand are very significant in Hirado beginning in the early 19th c.

i think it might not be a censer, which is what i thought it was. it may be a hand warmer or to put some item of clothing on. Censers are usually much more reticulated to let the incense waft around.

Cool! Thank you mp.kunst! It's very similar, but not as detailed as mine. it also sits lower than mine. The three boys have very detailed robes and they hold the globe higher up. The lions on mine are also much more detailed. I'm tempted to take the tape off the bottom to see if there is a mark under it. i still think it might have a different use - like a hand warmer because there are many less holes in it than any other censers i've seen.

well i am rooky in this , so i probably talk bs and by the way mp .kunst did the excellente heavy lifting

i found another with stained biscuit ???!. The three boys in the stand are very significant in Hirado beginning in the early 19th c.- maybe but i actually i wonder probably after the reopening of Japan , so i think it can,t be earlier than very late EDO , probably late 1900

i tried to narrow it down to signed Hirado , did , not recognize it this way hirado ,

actually i got no doubt it is real hirado ( but i am a newby) IMO it is very well , far better than M.P, KUnst example

residu of beehive crackjle probably ( bottom ), Greek border = meander border if i am correct , i hope it make sense

different probably ferro sedimentation foto 4 due to different exposure to oxidising periferie versus inner rim

multicolo this way is known, i as a newby see no problems , and i think it is rather well, you should be proud, well done

IMO it still remains an Koro

you see this as a karako? have you seen the type of hair !
    11. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 1 year ago
thank you apostata. not sure what karako is or it's relation to hair?? but thank you for your knowledgeable comments.
    12. apostata apostata, 1 year ago
, you probably took , i did not knew---well karako are chinese kids, used in japanese scenes they look like the hair of the cartoonMiNNI MOUSE like the plate

Japanese Nabeshima Karako Plate / Dish Marked Porcelain - Meiji Period Early 1900 FIVE Children Design

personnaly but i can,t substantiate this is likely export ware which was a hype from 1850 on because you actually need the disclosure of Japan
    13. apostata apostata, 1 year ago
addendum i don,t know IMO you took the wrong reference ( the shaping of the voice )this type of polychroom is likely later so, something like meijji 1870 and on
