This sweet little box (6.5" wide x 3.5" high x 4.25" deep) is made of birdseye maple wood. I found it at a local consignment store. Inside was this note: "Birds eye maple storage box. Believed to be early 20th C. Key now missing. Birds eye maple wood used for premium furniture."
Well, I'm a sucker for both nicely made boxes and figured wood -- especially birdseye, curly and quilted maple -- and it was not expensive, so naturally it came home with me. The box is made of solid wood, all right, although pieced together interestingly (see photo of interior). However it looks like the exterior was finished with shellac, which has darkened and is now cracking with age, so it would probably benefit from stripping and refinishing. And the darker wood used on the edges: is it walnut, perhaps?
I'm honestly not sure of its age, despite the note. It's certainly attractively constructed; but to my eyes the hinge looks relatively new. Then again, I really don't know much about these things. Perhaps the hinge was replaced at some point.

Great box..I would've bought it too. Possibly a jewelry box..might have had a tray with compartments?

Thank you for your very kind comments, jscott0363, kwqd and dav2no1.

@dav2no1, the interior dimensions are quite small (due to the thickness of the wooden sides) so I'm not sure if a tray would have fit inside it! But it's a nice thought. I prefer jewellery boxes with compartment trays myself, so much more usable that way ;)

And thank you all for the love:
