    5 Gallon Redwing Pottery Crock

    Circa: 1918- 1920
    Approximately 12 1/4"(across top) x 13 1/4" tall

My sister picked up this crock from one our collector friends that is moving. I recently commandeered the crock from her to use as a cane storage. It's a little small for what I need, but I'll keep it safe for now. I am not an expert in these and I'm just learning.

This crock has the 4" Red Wing and #7 Union Stoneware Company logos. There is a series of lines to the right of the logo..not sure what that means or if it's a manufacturing defect?

These five-gallon crocks were used for pickling vegetables, making sauer kraut, and even fermenting Wine.

    DATING
"Red Wing / Union Pottery introduced the Red Wing Logo around 1906, it was first issued at 6-inches wide, then reduced to 4-inches wide, and then to the more common 2-inch-wide logo.
The Blue Oval Logo at the base tells a more accurate timeline on when the crock was produced. This is the #7 design of the oval which was used from 1906 to 1930s."

With the combination of the 4-inch wing and the #7 logo, this crock dates approximately between 1918 and 1920s.

They are now reproducing these crocks. See here for examples of the new style logo vs the old logo.

That's a pretty fantastic crock Dave and a really nice size one at that! My parents had several very old crocks, but some of my 7 sisters and 2 brothers have already scarfed them up before I had a shot at them.

"They" are no longer reproducing these crocks. "They" closed production in August of 2019. "They" produced great quality stoneware. "They" could not compete with cheaply made stoneware made by other current producers.
