Hello everyone!!
Here's one you won't see often. It's a vintage cast iron doorstop depicting John Bull. This is one of my favorites. He's certainly got a very stern expression. I've seen some folks refer to this as a Union Jack Bulldog. But, it's most definitely John Bull. John Bull is to the UK as Uncle Sam is to the USA. This one was missing 90% of it's original paint, so I repainted him to his original glory. He stands 9 3/8" tall, 5" wide and weighs in a just over 3lbs.
John Bull originated in satirical works of the early 18th century and would come to stand for "English liberty" in opposition to revolutionaries. He was popular through the 18th and 19th centuries until the time of the First World War, when he generally stopped being seen as representative of the "common man". John Bull is usually depicted as a stout man in a tailcoat with light-colored breeches and a top hat which, by its shallow crown, indicates its middle class identity.
Thanks for stopping in to check out my John Bull doorstop!!

I missed this one before but I love the stoic rigid pose he has, there certainly is no shortage of personality in this treasure !~
