These two pedestrian push buttons originally retired from the city of New York. They are over 40 years old, and I do not know exactly where they saw service there. Years ago, pedestrian push buttons were implemented by the city's D.O.T. to give pedestrians right-of-way to safely cross busy streets. Over the years, though, traffic patterns gradually changed, causing push buttons to be no longer proper. As a result, many were disconnected from service and left widely intact.

Though many push buttons are inoperable in New York City today, there are select locations in namely remote regions, where traffic conditions permit the use of active push buttons.

I saw a show once about newer crosswalk push buttons. Showed how the majority don't actually do anything and are just for people to feel good.
