Bunshudo foundry commemorative tray, 1933

This cast iron tray is 8.75" long x 2.75" wide x .75" high. It came with its original box. It is heavily inscribed to commemorate an event which makes it possible to date it. It was beautifully cast and in new condition, so probably spent its life in storage.

The green patina has no flaws. What appears to be discoloration in my images are reflections from my background medium. There is little evidence of rework or finishing after casting so this is very fine work, indeed. I have not been able to determine if there is any functional use for this tray. Perhaps intended for use as a paperweight?

It was made by the Bunshudo cast iron foundry. I have not been able to determine which institution awarded it and doubt that I will be able to do so. The seller told me that he purchased it at a flea market on Misawa Air Base between 2000 and 2003. The locals were permitted access to the base for that purpose.

I have stopped collecting, going to thrift/op shops , etc., but have decided to undertake a monthly auction site challenge and find one, preferably small, item each month with a total cost of under $20, including shipping.
