Ideal doll marked 1970 on back of head. Believe the code on the back of head reads LL-16-H-162. Has a "trigger" on the back. Can't find this doll on the Ideal site, unsure what the trigger was meant to control. Thanks!

      Hi, nicoblue1977. :-)

Plugging that code (LL-16-H-162) into a search engine yielded what looks to me like a twin, at least in terms of the doll head and that trigger mechanism:

1970 Ideal Patti Playful Doll Variation on Box and Doll

      *snip*

      https://www.antiquedolls-collectors-onlineadvisors.com/1970-ideal-patti-playful-doll-variation-on-box-and-doll.html

Apparently, that squeeze-style mechanism is to move the head.

You might want to get in touch with the author (Jameshadden at aol.com), because they were also having trouble finding another like their doll.

He at least knew the name, because it was on the doll's dress.

Whoops, more on that mechanism (this picclick link for a defunct eBay listing looks like it's by the same doll owner):

This prototype version of Patti Playful I have is different from all others I`ve seen.

      *snip*

Mine has a squeeze type handle with a trigger that actually opens and closes the dolls mouth and the others I`ve seen only moves the head from side to side. I was told that Ideal decided not to put the extra expense into making all the released versions of this doll have the movable mouth. At the time,it seemed to be an unnecessary and costly idea. So they canned it.

      *snip*

You would have thought Ideal would have at least removed the text that states" Give me your helping hand....I will yawn, smile and make funny faces for you". But they didn`t. I imagine a lot of little girls were disappointed when they opened the box and the dolls head only waddled from side to side.

So your doll is a prototype.

keramikos - wow, thanks for all the info! I guess the guy selling it on ebay as "the only one out there" wasn't exactly correct as it appears that a few others with this trigger were listed and sold. I think? It's kind of hard to tell from the Sold Listings pictures of the actual doll if they have the trigger or just a handle. Although some that include the box/instructions do show the trigger on the instructions page. Unless this is what he is referring to as why the kids would be disappointed. Thanks again!

      nicoblue1977, You're welcome. :-)

Yes, it seems that there were at least two of these prototype Patti Playful dolls, and likely more.

It sounds like you've found more listings with pictures of the instructions. Cool. :-)

Here's a Worthpoint listing that shows an instruction sheet, but you can't really see much of it:

Here is a November 1970 ad for Patti Playful:

The Ideal Toy Corporation copyrighted a doll named Patti Playpal back in 1962:

However, that seems to have been a larger doll, e.g.:

Check out this 1965 patent assigned to the Ideal Toy Corporation:

The present invention relates generally to an animated doll, and in particular to a mouth-animating mechanism for a doll.

The answer is out there somewhere. };-)
