    Here we have an old German 5 Mark note issued in 1882 or later. They printed millions of them based on the serial numbers. So why is it rare? It was redeemed by the same government that issued it and the denomination was high enough that most people could not afford to keep it as a souvenir. As with most countries when this happens you get a rare note type. The more common notes are the ones not redeemed due to the issuer falling or the currency unit collapsing after a war or inflationary period.

      Interesting.. here's a lot of WWII take home money I posted a few years ago. I thought some of the notes denominations were worth a lot during that time but maybe because the war they were not?
