Rattan(?) covered wood box, Chinese?

I wonder if anyone would have a clue what this box is for. measures 11" x 6" x 9" high. Red wood inner box. It looks Chinese to me? I buy random things just because I like them .... and often wonder what it is I have bought. I've heard of Shanghai Handicrafts and wonder if this is one of those? .... I'd love to know if it has a specific purpose ....Please!
