This oval wooden Japanese box is about 7.5" long x 3.25"wide x 3.5" high. It is not marked but is hand carved and decorated. Similar boxes were sometimes marked under the lid. It is heavily painted and quite dirty. It weighs about 10 ounces so is a bit hefty. Not sure what kind of wood it is. It appears to be a representation of a Kabuki character, but I do not know the context. It was purchased directly from a Japanese seller of interesting stuff in Nagasaki, Japan. No idea of age or who or where. I may try to find a way to mount it so that it can be hung from a wall. The "spooky factor" is too great to put it away in storage.
Ultra cool kabuki head box, such an intriguing expression

Thanks for your comments and information, Waki! I don't sell from or insure my collection but good to know it might be special, so I will store it until I get a display cabinet to protect it.
