This is a 1858 woodblock with blind embossing (using a woodblock without ink to leave a raised surface) - I picked it up recently, the frame it came in said it was acquired in Toyko, 1958. It was backed with paper around that point is my guess... The colors have faded almost completely in sections. It is interesting to see how the blue from this time period fades less than all the other colors... but for its age it is in great condition.
