This is an item that has long been on my "glass bucket list". To the collector of Victorian art glass, rainbow diamond quilted satin glass is up among the elite of the genre. It is rare, & typically astronomically expensive. I have been lucky to pick up a couple of examples over the years at generally reasonable prices. But for some reason, maybe just to me, a rose bowl in this decor seemed like the ultimate goal. Iconic Victoriana, I guess.
Anyway, this one turned up on eBay AU (along with another equally fine if not more stunning piece) last week for a low start price. It had many watchers & plenty of low ball bids. I for one do not understand the logic behind bidding with a week to run, but hey, that's just me, I'm a last minute kinda guy. Anyhow, I did my last minute thing & it worked a treat.
So here we have a classic example of a Victorian art glass rose bowl in the diamond quilted rainbow satin decor. It measures 9 cm tall, 6 cm across the incurved crimped top rim, 4 cm across the base, & a surprisingly substantial 32 cm in girth. Definitely on the larger side of sizing for rose bowls.
The rose bowl is made from three layers of cased glass, clear over rainbow & white with a light custard interior, which contains uranium & glows bright green under UV light. No, the seller hadn't mentioned this fact & I checked for myself upon unwrapping & noticing the custard toned interior - bonus!
It has a neatly polished out pontil mark on the base.
Most likely English origin, possibly by Thomas Webb & Sons, circa 1880s.
Perfect condition.
Another very beautiful vase. I love it!!
Many thanks, Scott, much appreciated!
