Hello everyone!!
I found this 8 gallon crock last year in a local antique shop. It was made by Louisville Pottery Company, now known as Louisville Stoneware. I don't typically collect items such as this. but for the price, I couldn't pass it up. Louisville Pottery Company started the Cherokee line in 1906 and continued thru 1950. They began using this logo featuring a Cherokee Indian head surrounded by eight stars for a very short time, two years I'm told. In 1908 they removed the eight stars and replaced them with their LOUISVILLE POTTERY COMPANY name surrounding the Cherokee head. Though the logo is quite worn, it's a very nice crock, with no cracks or chips. The crock is quite heavy and measures 16 1/2" tall and 14" diameter. My 93 year mother told me stories of how my grandfather would make dill pickles and would also brine vegetables, in a crock like this, in order to preserve them thru the winter months.
Lewis Pottery Company began in 1815 and was eventually renamed, later into the 19th century, and operated as Bauer Pottery, Cherokee Pottery and Louisville Pottery, which remained in business until 1970 after which it was taken over by new ownership and renamed Louisville Stoneware, which is still in business today.
Thanks very much for taking time to stop in for a look!!
