This is a scarce Lehn and Fink Inc. Medal for the advancement of Pharmaceutical Science. The medal itself is 14k Gold, weighs 21.27g which contains .39891 oz of pure gold, diameter is 38.8 mm. The plain edge is marked “14k” and “BBB” The obverse a balance scale above a winged mortar and pestle which in turn is above a medallion resting on a wreath. The medallion is inscribed “ For The Advancement of Pharmaceutical Science.“ Arched across the top is “ LEHN AND FINK INC MEDAL” The reverse has a laurel wreath and the inscription “AWARDED TO” followed by the engraved name (Carle W. Lyons) the graduating senior with the highest GPA in the school of pharmacy who won the medal, and “OF THE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY OF” followed by the engraved university name (Creighton University) where the winner was a student. The medal was first awarded in 1894 until about 1967 when the company was sold. This medal was awarded in the early 1930’s based on what I found when I did an internet search of the winner’s name. These medals were awarded at various universities to the graduating pharmacy student with the highest grade point average. That would mean that a fair number of these medals should have been awarded but very few have ever appeared for sale on the internet auction sites. Were the later issues still nice gold medals like this one? Of those that were issued how many survived the gold melt downs of the late ‘70’s and ‘80’s or the current sky rocketing gold prices.
My father was a recipient in the 1950's but received a plaque with the gold coin attached to it.
Thanks! Sounds like a medal worthy of being proud of.
