This is the Shure 730, made famous by a photo of Billie Holiday taken in 1949 by Herman Leonard. It started being made in the late 1930's, as a low cost unidirectional mic. Although it has openings in the back, it was heralded as an efficient microphone for enviroments with background noise and reverberation.

It's counter-intuitive but directional mics have openings to the back or side. Omnidirectionl mics will generally have openings only to the front.
