This cabinet card image depicts Cadet William Sharp McNair on horseback on the Plain at the United States Military Academy (West Point, New York).
The image was taken by Pach Brothers (probably the most well known photographer of West Point cadets). The image measures about 8" X 10".
The photograph was taken in the very late 1880s. McNair is shown on a powerful black horse with a cavalry saber by his side.
McNair graduated from West Point in 1890 as an Artillery LT. He went on to serve in the Philippine Insurrection where he was cited for gallantry in action. During WW1, he commanded an Artillery Brigade in both the 1st Division and 76th Division. By the end of the War he was a Major General and the Chief of Artillery for 1st Corps (AEF). MG McNair was recognized with the award of the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) for WW1 service. Post WW1, he commanded Camp Bragg. He died in 1936 and is buried at FT Sam Houston.

Love this photo Scott! The Horse is just stunning. The cadet is a small guy in comparison. Also, that sabre is almost as tall as he is. Great image!
I think that it is a M1860 cavalry saber.

That is a huge horse or a small man. Very neat picture and history of it.
