These six 8" Asian painted Porcelain plates hung on my Grandparents wall my whole life. I have no idea where they are from or anything about their history. There are no markings on the back. Is there someone out there who can help me figure out just what these plates are? Thank you very much, Michelle Amieux p.s. Four are in perfect shape, and two have tiny chips.
These are called Chinese Famille Rose Enamel plates. They are also called Cantonese Famille Rose Enamel but were produced in Jindezhen and transported down to the coastal ports of China. The gold is a sign of ''famille rose'' rather than the "famille verte" which is more to the Chinese taste. They were made for export to the West.
The plate is divided into four sections with two pairs of opposing panels decorated with rural and city scenes.
I'm sorry about the duplication Michelle. Get rid of them if you'd like.
I have always loved the set of six, yet also wondereed about my Grandparents. They were so conservative when they were older(which seemed forever!!), yet had great exotic taste in art. Each plate is very close but not quite identical to the others, for example the figures an a second plate will be in the same position, but different clothes and background. I don't think any one of the six is exactly the same.
Thank you vetraio50, I have learned more about those plates overnight, than I learned in my 50 years!!
Thank you Bellin 68, I love your taste!!
hi michell have you seen the things i have on here ,i have an asian plate 1800s
I will check, Lundy.
this is made around 1880-1890 chinese rose medallion serving platter after the Taiping Rebbelion a so called recovery piece the consequence was a roughness in the pieces , and before customs clearance requirements
another approach is to date by the density of the plate and the refinment, the later Rose medaillion were less dense and less refinement
and another approach to date is by means of the copper ware in the hair in combination with the refinement and vividness of the color red ( good stuff is daoguang )
and the main indicator is the tomatosoup floor in combination with the squares
