Yet another Saturday market find is this float bowl by Josef Ekberg. I have been collecting Scandinavian pottery for years but had not come across an early piece like this one. Mind you, this is a later piece in Ekberg's output which goes back to the latter part of the nineteenth century. Ekberg was born in 1877. His father worked as a porcelain painter in the 1840's until 1885 at the Gustavsberg Ceramics Factory founded in 1827 near Stockholm, Sweden.

Lustre pottery is a long term favourite and I was lucky to pick this one up cheaply. Ekberg began working with lustres in the period after William Kåge arrived at Gustavsberg in 1917. The glazes were hand painted and finished off with gold patterns and borders. In this case there is additional decoration in a very dark green, it's almost a black.
I love that green lustre and the contrasting purple/maroon is striking.
The bowl is marked on the base Gustavsberg and their Anchor. Underneath is the date for 1927 and to the right is the monogram of the artist Josef Ekberg. Josef Ekberg died in 1945 at the age of 68.
There is a great site with examples of his work set out in chronological order here: http://josefekberg.com/Pages/work.html

The bowl is very shallow and is 22 cm (8.7 ins) across and only 4 cm (1.5 ins) high.

      Hello Vet,
It's like looking up into a dome that culminates in a modest rose smudge.
The concentric circles also give the impression of looking into a depth greater than the depth of the bowl,..........that's a beautiful thing.
I hope I'll be fortunate enough to stumble upon an Ekberg treasure.

Oh wow! A post from 9 years ago and it's loved just as much! Lots of pink out there today. This reminds me of being in grade school where we would place a shiny oblong paper in a tub and then add colors of paint. The operator would then spin the machine and our "painting" would come out similar to this. Ah, those old memories... Great piece of work here!!!
