Bottle openers have been around as long as beer has right? Well, not really...but certainly since the bottle cap!
I'm a cork screw collector and bottle openers are kinda in that same category. So whenever I find bottle openers, you can bet there's a good chance you'll find corkscrews too!
I've posted two pictures. In the first one you'll see a few different styles that I like to collect. Obviously I like colorful types and figural ones, verses the more commonly found simple chrome plated ones with beer advertising on them.
I'm a JFO Member for anyone who wants to know. And if you don't know, JFO stands for Just For Openers, which is a national bottle opener collectors club. Check it out as it's a great club to be a member of, and they put on a great convention each year!
The letters and numbers I'm referencing are catalog codes from the JFO catalog. They have created an EXTENSIVE cataloging system to help their members stay organized and be able to record each and every opener they find! It's awesome!
So the little can types are L-1's. They are found with both Beer and Consumer advertising on them. They are mechanical types and were made in W. Germany. I've got over 40 of them and still looking for more! Actually, there's quite a few advertisements that I'm missing in my collection.
Next is the orange one that's an M-1 type. It's hard to find these in good condition, but I pick them up when I can. They are usually only found with beer advertising on them.
Below the row of L-1's are two slider types. The one with a corkscrew is an M-73 (bottle opener slider w/corkscrew) and the one to the right is an M-3 (bottle opener slider only). These are sleek and functional pieces. Love'em!
Finally are the "Flash Corkscrews" with openers. These are from the 1940's to 50's and maybe 60's. But they are advertising pieces from all over the USA. They usually have a tourist destination (The Grand Canyon), or national park, or just a city and state. People would collect these as souvenirs while traveling around America! I've got over 300 different ones and looking for more!
In the second picture you'll see many different figural openers. These are all Syroco bottle openers. Syroco is a wood composite that is pressed into a mold, and produces a piece that looks like it was hand carved. Pretty cool huh? Well, each one of these was also produced with a corkscrew. :o) Hence they are all in my collection.
Do you have a couple you'd like more information on?
I'm interested! Feel free to contact me anytime!
I'd love to hear from you!
Cheers
