Old brass compass

This old compass is another piece of family history. It was used by my Great-grandmother's uncle to ply his trade in the forests of Parry Sound Ont. Canada in the early 1900's. He had the second contract on his allotted tract of land to cut the virgin spruce. Another contractor had been there already in previous years to remove the virgin White Pine. There had been some White Pine cut and left when that contractor couldn't remove the logs due to conditions in the forest. The owner of this compass figured out how to get it through the swamp and out. In 1998 the remaining rough cut lumber was in a falling down building on my Grandpa's farm. They measured 24" plus in width. He had them made into ten Pine chests that I included a picture of! It isn't evident from the picture but the dressed lumber used in their construction still measures 18" plus.
