"Use it or simply enjoy looking at it – the choice is yours…"
On the Tea Time Theme I thought I'd show Richard Sapper's kettle 9091 for Alessi. This was in a skip. It had been trashed. It still functions perfectly well, has no leaks and has a two toned whistle that functions properly. Someone had just gotten bored with it. A few light scratches from use on the mirror surface.
It still brings a smile to my face each morning. So does the Smiley mug gifted to me by AmberRose! Not to mention the Lilies!
It is an arch shape that has recurred in the last few items, austro!
It was the first of the "Designer Kettles" of the 80's! Love the handle too.
Good functional design Sapper cleverly replaced the annoying shrill sound of most whistling kettles with a brass whistle that produces the ‘E’ and ‘B’ notes that sound similar to the river boat whistles heard on the Rhine. Sapper apparently spent time collaborating with a maker of tuning pipes in the Black Forest to obtain a particularly attractive melody.
It's part of the Alessi Officina collection – an area reserved for Alessi’s most challenging and innovative products that are often limited to small-scale productions.
Wikipedia says of Sapper in part: Richard Sapper, born 1932 in Munich, is a German industrial designer based in Milan, Italy. He is considered one of the most iconic designers of his generation, his products typically featuring a combination of technical innovation, simplicity of form and an element of wit and surprise. He has received numerous international design awards, including 10 prestigious Compasso d'Oro awards and the Raymond Loewy Foundation's Lucky Strike award. His products are part of the permanent collections of many museums around the world, with over 15 represented at New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), as well as London's Victoria and Albert and Design Museums.
Downstairs where I live: obviously a major site of over-consumption in our disposable society!
Many thanks Bellin and eye4' too!
The mepra cruet is the next one...
First, you are a darling V, glad the Smiley is still spreading happiness.
Second, half of what we do is a type of recycling, isnt it? You just skipped the thrift and went straight to the trash. Doing without the middle man so to speak.
Of course. I love Oct 1 and May 1 as they are the two big moving days. Good fun strolling the alley and picking up treasure
I've been re-cycling since I was five! ........ and hoarding since I was five and a half!
You are so green.
We all need to be!
A political comment.
Hahaha. Silly banana!
Have a lovely evening/morning gentlemen depending on you contenant.
I will post a bunch of stuff tomorrow...including, yep the ugliest vase I have ever purchased.
Yes I am a tease.
"your continent". Silly spelly thing.
I'm incontinent with laughter!
You are both dorks...and awesome...but mostly dorks;)
Many thanks Manikin!
Not sure about that spout!!!!.....:-/
I have to say, one of the few Alessi designs I love :)
Many thanks inky and austro too! The spout's a bit whacky but you pull the ring back and the whistle flips up for easy of filling and pouring. The design of the ring pull allows you to catch a notch and hold the spout in the open position. No lid. The helmet is the kettle's container. I enjoy using it and love the whistle!
Beautiful thing! It's all just right, the proportions, the colors, the shapes,.....a noble rescue.
You've been posting some wonderful pieces, Vet,.............Thanks!
It's a quirky, Willy Wonka kind of thing,.....makes me smile, too!
AND!... suddenly I love i!!!....:-) ...I must admit I did wonder a bit about the filling of it....:-/.. no flies on me 'mate'!...:-) .....I also have to admit that I when I first look at it reminded me of BELLIN68 with a punk hair implant!...:-)
Thanks BELLIN68!.. it was!.. said in the most loving way possible....:-x

Yes, this is an iconic design! And brings back memories of my father's High-Tech home in Los Angeles during the 80's. We had one of these as our home was furnished with nothing but the greatest designed furniture and appliances from that era, all the way down to the table settings and place mats. Nice find!
