Could someone please help me better identify this extinguisher? Its date and possibly where I would be able to find information on this extinguisher? Thank you very much.

Hi, I saw one of these at an estate sale this summer..I was able to find it on line under brass fire extinguishers. The cost was about $20.00. but it could be worth more.

You have a 1 quart brass fire extinguisher that at one time contained carbon tetrachloride. They were used in homes, vehicles, airplanes, boats, etc. from about 1910 until discontinued around 1960--yours is probably from the 40's/ 50's. The public liked them because carbon tet does not conduct electricity and won't freeze to -30 degrees. The bad news is they killed many people with them--carbon tet on an open flame creates phosgene nerve gas and it is cancer causing. If I can be of further help let me know. Thanks--Doug.

Thanks for the support Doug, I've been saying that about carbon-tet on here but they didn't believe me..............BAD STUFF.........

So is it dangerous to have this fire extinguisher in the house or yard on display?
    5. Pop_abides Pop_abides, 14 years ago
Only if it still has carbon-tet still in it, if it does you can take it to you local Fire Department and they should empty it for you..... If it is empty............ENJOY !

I have a rectangle "Fire Gun #3", 1 gal. Carbon Tetrachloride type Fire Extinguisher. Was made for U.S.A.F., Contract #19590, #83577. Paper hang tag says, last inspected, 2-13-66. Would like to know age and possible value?

      Thanks, Larry Koch

I was cleaning out a barn and found hanging on a wall still with the orgional bracket a brass fire extinguisher. It is an American LaFrance 1 1/2 quart Fire Gun #2. It says Foamite Corporation on it. It is full and says Carbon Tetrachloride on it. I have looked and have not found another quite like it on the net. It says patent pending. I can not find a date on it. Please help me know more about it. Year, worth, anything else you think would help me understand it better. I can take a picture and send it if that would be helpful. Thank you.

We had them in the 60s and would empty the carbon tet and fill them with water. They made great water pistols.

      Larry Koch--
the fire gun#3 had 2 different labels. is it a stamped/pressed label or a printed, color label? the typically go for around $120-$160 ish depending on condition.
Tim Yokel- would have to see the label. is it stamped/pressed or printed? Was it made in Utica, Elmira, or Toronto? is it brass, red or chrome finish? depending on those it could be anywhere from $40-$80

catfish- the fire gun#4 had 2 different labels. is it a stamped/pressed label or a printed, color label? the typically go for around $120-$160 ish depending on condition.
