Just received this old Singer in it's original cabinet and do not know how to open it. It belonged to my Aunt who bought it new near Nashville, TN, sometime in the 1950's, we guess.

Would like to know how to open and if it needs a key, how to obtain since we do not know the model number of the machine.

Many thanks for any help provided.

Don't know from experience, but I've heard that most of these can be opened with a very small thin screwdriver inserted into the little hole where the key fit. It should then allow the case to be raised sort of like a car hood until the other end latch allows you to take the case off. This link should give you some idea of what you're up against. Hope it helps!

Thanks, ChinaBlue! It finally worked and the website was a big help as well. Found that the lock itself has two flanges that both move to the outside to make a very secure lock. Will now investigate machine and see what happens next. Appreciate quick reply.

Glad I could help! Singer machines are usually really easy to date by the numbers on them. Check it here when you get around to it.

And I'd love to see what was under that bentwood top. :-)
