Vallauris is a town in the south of France on the French Riviera. It has long been known for the manufacture of pottery. In the 1930's Jean Gerbino, Suzanne Douly and her husband Georges Ramie and Andre Baud - all experienced potters, set up potteries in the town. In 1948 Pablo Picasso arrived and the town became a magnet for both artists and celebrities. The 1950's saw a period of major creativity in the town and the expansion of numerous studio potteries all bearing the name of Vallauris. There are still nearly 70 potters currently active in the area.
I know this will not be everyone's "cuppa-tea".
There are many now who take this seriously rather than just another form of 'kitsch'.
I do not know who did this vase for sure. A couple of names come to mind but it has just an inscribed signature "Vallauris". I've seen this vase with a sticker saying: Céramique D'Art, Vallauris. There are two tone versions in a variety of colour tones. In France this type of glaze is called "écume de mer" or sea foam. More recently we are talking about "lava glazes" especially when referring to German pottery of the modernist period.
I love the Volcanic/living Barnacle look about it,....off-beat and beautiful.
Many thanks to the two B's: Budek & Bellin!
I put in a photo of how it works with the Goldscheider "Adagio" and those amazing 'lilies' that Amber gifted.
Oooh la la, my friend! All that dancing, it's a party for sure:)
