Just wanted to share this because it is so cool and has so much info in all those books. There is also a book on the effects of carbon tet on human beings. There are training manuals for the salesman to set a small fire and put it out, thats what the oil can and can of sterno were for I suppose, I have had this for aprox. 28 years, I have 56 or so pics if anyone want's to see more, pcdoors@hotmail.com Patrick

Interesting item , My wife and I were visiting her grandfathers home in Kansas and his walls were adorned with these glass things which he said were fire extinguishers . We couldn't figure out exactly how they worked or what was in them but now we know ! That was 35 years ago and grampa Floyd and the house are gone but we have one of the fire extinguisers hanging on the wall in our family room to remember him by . I have about 6 or 7 of the grenade type fire extinguishers. As I have to sell the property that they are in, I would like to know how much they are worth. Also there is liquid inside so I don't know if they can be shipped.
Is there a site that I can go to to see more of these?

hey Susan they are worth about $75.00 each. there is carbon tet. chloride in them. I would take one of them to the US post office and see what the shipping requirements are. I know you cant sell them on e-bay. Carbon tet is some nasty stuff, don't break one!
I have three of the "hanging" style (center, frosted) from a marina and was told they could be hung in boat engine rooms (like the Titantic). True?
These need to be handled quite carefully. The carbon tet is very dangerous if they breake. The chemical takes all the oxygen out of the room to extinguish the fire and anybody in the room. They difinately can't be shipped under current postal regulations.

actually the danger of carbon tet is the gas it produces from the fire, not the oxygen it displaces. but all fires produce deadly gasses and after throwing one of these on a fire, you are heading out the door, not staying in the room. there were millions of these things used over 30 years with an additional hundreds of thousands going into use every year. 15 to 20 million fire extinguishers containing carbon tet were used over 30 years in all kinds of risks and all kinds of enclosures, without any evidence of any kind showing deaths or even serious injury caused by the carbon tetra-chloride fumes. Skip, if those hanging grenades have spring loaded fuses on them, they melt with boiling water, so if the engine room gets hot.........but understand the reaction of fire and carbon tet is the danger, also everything that is burning creates deadly fumes.
i recently aquired a red comet sales kit with booklets,sterno,melt keys,grenade holders, sales reciept book ,contracts etc. and most important one red grenade with no content and red color is crackling on the outside and one clear (full) grenade.The box it all comes in is in real nice shape and kinda opens up in a manner to help display eveything. could someone let me know what it could be worth. my e mail is joekollars@live.com

Antique fire grenades that look more like fancy bottles are more rare, and extremely collectible. Most were made after 1870 and until about 1910.
The Red Comet type were made later, and are actually pretty common (the sample kit would be the best example to have).

It is great to find this. I bought a 100 year old house and there is one hanging at the top of the basement stairs. I knew it was something to do with putting out fires but had no idea the stuff inside was dangerous....Thanks
