The Glassmarks lexicon lists a number of references to Loetz dekors lost / obscured by the mists of time ...
Among them is "Columbia" .... and nowhere else have I found even a mention ... produced for the Chicago World Trade Exhibition (Columbian Exhibition) in 1893 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Europeans rediscovering the Americas ...
.... conveniently dated by the factory (1492) and identified in gold numerals on the base ... Dekor III/210 ... H13.5" W 7.5" no pontil

Interesting from any number of viewpoints ...
    * Base glass is Orange ! ... was expecting a Rubin ground ... orange was also used extensively early in the 1890's other dekors (particularly Chine)
    * Demonstrates the use of surface iridescent finishes by Loetz in 1892-3
... and that these were displayed in the US at that time ... (Tiffany etc)
    * Gold appears to be "applied cold" in layers ... building a 3 dimensional structure for the "medallion" and the decorative elements ...
    * Gives an insight into the value of the internet as a search / research tool
    * It is just a beautiful combination of history ... Columbus / 1893 / Loetz

... still takes my breath away ... the only drawback that I can see in finding things like this is in it's making the illness worse ...year 4 ... :-)

Thanks everyone for the feedback ... think my only real contribution was some luck with the timing ... and pressing the button ...

... I think it does add another dimension to my understanding of what Loetz were doing in the early 1890's ... certainly a different process to the marmorietes and octopus decors ... and this predates even Olympia ...

      Hi Deb
Another on the list is Pavonia ... Similar to Persica but Heliotrope to Amber ... any thoughts ... ???

Hi SteveS my wifes bag just arrived today over 2 months since it got lost on our way to Europe and mine was 24 days late ! NEVER fly with Finnair . tThey are hopeless and do not respond to all our emails letters or callls.
    11. ozmarty ozmarty, 12 years ago
Just realized that this reminded me of Mt Washington Royal Flemish. I have only seen pieces in books and on the net .

      Finnair Fini Finallly! ...
Still you have to admit they got their priorities right ... got the glass back before they worried about clothing, toiletries, passports, etc ...
      :-)

Ah ! I got the glass back! and was explicit with the person at checkin .. that if "this bag goes missing as well it is WAR!!) .

Apologies for stirring up such memories ...
It has been a great week courtesy of CW - managed to see an Alpengruen, identify a Pavonia (I think) and list a Columbus. ... Happy and memorable !
Thanks again to everyone for sharing in it !

Can't believe what the lidded piece sold for. This one must be 5 figures?!
BTW Marty, it was listed as MT washington royal flemish to start :).

I have a question for you about the Loetz Columbia decor. I tried to reach you via email but didn't hear back. Try to reach me at info@loetz.com. Thanks!
