This pocket watch belonged to my grandfather and has remained in storage for years, wrapped in cloth. The numbers, hands, and case are gold. The chain is gold-fill. The face has two cockatoos facing each other. I have never opened the back, fearful of damaging the watch. I have never seen another like it.

Updated info - this 17 Jewel Elgin watch was made in 1937, serial number 37087991; case made by C.W.C. Co. - 1661386, jeweler said was probably "rolled gold" or plated. He also said, numbers and hands were gold made by Elgin, but again, could be plated. He wasn't sure. He said interior mechanism was sound and ran "perfectly fine." He wound he watch, set the time, and it has remained punctual all day.

Beautiful! I'd love to see the back... Unfortunately, the only way to get more info is to open the back up and get the serial number off the movement... It looks like a hinged case. Here's a link to help you get it open: http://thewatchguy.homestead.com/pages/opencase.html

I found a local antique dealer in pocketwatches who is also a jeweler. I have to take some things to my SDB today. I believe I will take the watch out and have a professional open the back. Clumsy me, I'm liable to "slice my thumb to bone" as you said. Thank you for your prompt feedback. I'll post a new pix and an update after the visit.

Jason, I can give a good song & dance too when I see something I want. Looking forward to the details on this.

I just discovered that the CWC stands for Crescent Watch Case, Co. and that the Crescent moon and star stand for a "gold filled" case that was guaranteed for "twenty years" according to the website. Here is a website that contains information regarding the definition of gold filled: https://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=gold+filled&tbs=dfn:1&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=O4Q_UPb6GYb-8ASK7IHIDQ&sqi=2&ved=0CB0QkQ4&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=cb0a96464fc107ee&biw=1366&bih=651

More research... I discovered my grandfather received this watch after 47 years on the job at the age of 75! He died in 1952 at the age of 90 in the month of August, which was also his name, one month after I was born on the 4th of July.
