it may even be upside-down - i keep flipping it around and it looks okay both ways. i bought this from a picker who said he found it in the trash in front of a house - along w/ a whole lot of cool, old things. i think it's very beautiful and a great piece and can't believe someone would throw it out! i bought the mission-style wall pocket at the Alameda Point Flea Market last year.
I wish I knew...wonderful frame! Is it completely craved or some gesso? For something found in a discard bin, it's in wonderful shape. The style is certainly traditional Art Nouveau, possibly French/Belgan or American in origin. What are the frame's dimensions? Oh, and I think you have it oriented correctly...
I'd turn it upside down, but then I'm from Down Under! The position of the original holes for the wires could give you an indication or the original position. I agree with miKKo, a really nice frame.
i'll try hanging it the other way and post more pics.
it's all carved and painted gold.
i can't believe that i've had it hanging upside-down for months now! it's so much nicer like this. the wire on the back is exactly in the center, so it could be for hanging either way. there's no gesso on the frame, but there are some wormholes, so i imagine it has some age to it. do you think that it's vintage 1900?
i just put another image so people can see it the other way too. i am preferring it w/ the flowers underneath alot.
I vote flowers on top! Pretty!
No way!
The new way is the way to go!
Gravity puts them to the bottom!
Sorry Amber!
honestly, i prefer it w/ the flowers down by a huge margin. it has a very different, much more balanced feel to it. the other way made me feel like it might crash down on my head - top-heavy. sorry ladies...
thanks scand_pieces. i'd love to learn more about this frame if anyone has any ideas.
Its beautiful. i like it the way you have it, with the decoration at the bottom.
Are you selling it?
Only i just saw one very similar on ebay.
thank you vintagefran. i'd love to see a similar one for sale. i have no idea what it's worth as i bought it from a picker who found it in the trash. it's old because it has genuine worm holes in it.
