Did they have only 5 digit phone numbers in the 1950's ? When I was a kid in the 50's we had a 7 digit phone number with the first two digits being letters.

I believe that 5 digit numbers changed to 5 digits & two letters in the 1950's. The amount of digits varied depending on the size of a city.
