I'm afraid I have to rain on your parade here. I also own one of these, and most of the ones you find for sale today are reproductions. If you look in the Loetz books, you'll notice that the real ones have a rough background, indicating that it was ground away rather than acid-etched. I purchased my own about 8 years ago, but at the time I was aware that it was made as a museum reproduction for sale to the public. These are being made in Prague today, and they show up on eBay about once a week. Even the seller of these copies does not hide the fact that he is in Prague. I sent him a message and asked if he could order me one in a specific color, as I was aware they are modern repros. As expected, he did not respond.
I concur. I've been burned by these reproductions, as well.
Well I guess it happens to everyone once. At least it comes with a low price.
thanks dlfd cogito and kunsthammer and dlfd i am interested in the guy s e mail adress and how are these reproductions priced?
The selling ID of the guy selling the fakes (and yes, they are fakes if they are saying they are Loetz and not repros) is Zoroaster, and as I said before, he didn't respond to my eBay message to him before. They are cheap for what he is saying they are. Around $120 or so if I remember, maybe a bit more.
amazing that they can make a profit on such a low price do you think this is etched and not cut?
Either etched or sandblasted.
new glass is cheap over there. I got a stephanik piece (they make the iridescent loetz tributes) this spring over there from the glass house for 75 dollars.
I bought a Romanian cameo vase about 8 years ago from a man in Rhode Island, and I drove to his pawn shop to pay for it and pick it up. He told me that he owns the factory where it was made, and the workers there earn only a few dollars a day for their trouble, so even if the vases sell cheap, he still makes a profit and has very low overhead.
amazing comments that will drop the price of art if it is possible to make these skillfull objects for a couple of bocs!!?
I would love to own some authentic Gallé glass, but I would be too afraid of buying a fake for thousands of dollars. I will leave them to the experts. Like Loetz, you really need to be an expert on what you collect to know enough to buy authentic glass when so many fakes are being made. So far with Loetz, there are copies that are close, but not so close that you can't tell the difference.
i have seen some fake galle vases but there is a difference and i know loetz has been copied but there must be a difference in colour as in colour there is often a fingerprint but i wish you loetz lovers strength because there are so many different shades of colours but the real craftsmen pieces (the ones that are harder to copy) should be easier to divide from fakes i think, although i know some expensive pieces are copied even with the help of molds that have been stolen from the factory. so be carefull with what you buy and make sure the price is what you want to pay for it and enjoy the piece, unlike some of us who think they invest their money well so if you just enjoy collecting you cant go wrong!
