I am looking for information about how this machine operates, like some pictures or someone that owns a working sewing machine like this one. If anyone would have a cabinet for this unit to mount in, I would enjoy visiting with them.
Is this older than a Wheeler - Wilson sewing machine?
Thanks, Ernie
i have seen this on the smithsonian site.
Gina,
Thanks for your information. I have since found this is WG Wilson sewing machine. I am still looking for an owner to help me with some parts quesitons.
Ernie
I happened on to a machine very similar to the one pictured above. Directions and Instructions for use manual was in the cabinet, it is in pretty rough shape. I have been trying to research this machine as well. This pic is the first I've come across where the mechanics are to the rear of the machine. The one I have is a Wilson (W.G.) Shuttle Sewing Machine No. 5. I can send pics of the mechanics of the machine if it would still e helful.
Jane
As you have discovered this machine is a W G Wilson, not related to Wheeler and Wilson. The Smithsonian has a couple of manuals although not the exact same model

Bernadette.
The machine pictured at
http://www.sewingmachinemuseum.com/W.%20G.%20Wilson.htm
looks the same.
The one I purchased also has a wooden cover that locks into the cabinet.
The manuals at

http://www.sil.si.edu/DigitalCollections/Trade-Literature/Sewing-Machines/NMAHTEX/0805/imagepages/image1.htm
are totally different.
The directions and instructions with the machine I have are in better condition than I thought. The instructions on how to use the machine are completely in tact, including how to use the shuttle and attachments. I have made copies so I do not damage the original.
I am very impressed that the machine is in such great condition, no missing parts! It even has the attatchments that were included with the machine when it was purchased.
I misspoke to say a no.5 machine, it uses a no.5 shuttle.
I can not find a date of manufacture anywhere on the machine. Although there are several patent numbers and dates on it.
Hopefully I will be able to get it working.
Thank you.
SewJane,
would it be possible to get a copy of the instruction book? I just received this machine and it appears to be intact including needle and shuttle. I will post pictures soon but would appreciate knowing how this machine works. The only issue I have seen is that the treadle cable may need to be replaced as one of the attaching hooks isw missing
Beckywilson,
Yes, I could send you a copy of the manual.
SewJane,
could you email me at rarchuleta@cox.net? I will reply back with my address or would even been thankful for a pdf electronic file. I have been cleaning the needle plate and the date appears to be 1871.
BeckyWilson,
My needle plate has 11 patent numbers, dates beginning June 22, 1852 - July 14, 1870, Last date is Jan 1, 1871 can't make out what is printed in front of the last date. Also has a 6 digit number at top of plate.
SewJane,
My machine has the same needle plate with the same dates. My serial number is 176372. I am still trying to clean and polish the plates so that this information is clearer
I just acquired the same machine, but head only... no shuttle or bobbin or manual. Someone actually painted to tension and handwheel red, so it looks like a fire engine!
If the manual is in pdf, may I have a copy please.
Does anyone have pics of bobbin and shuttle? Is it boat or later bullet? Has anyone found Boye equivalent or source? I just came across Wilson irons used as a table.
Has hinges on right, but bobbin winder is missing. Is it part of the treadle table or machine?
Thanks
Maria

The irons we saw were not for sale.
correction: Machine has hinges on right, but bobbin winder is missing. Is it part of the treadle table or machine?
Farmhousesewer,
I can send you a copy of the manual. The manual has pics of the shuttle.
Thank you, so much! My email address is mariagoetz@bellsouth.net
Chris? I would love to see more pictures.
Jane? Thanks for the copy of the manual. Even with some damaged pages, it is invaluable! Diagram in the manual would indicate a boat shuttle, so I expect it will be even more difficult to find, but I will pursue.
Has anyone identified the appropriate needle?
It is unlikely that I will work my sewing machine head any time soon, as there are many others with cabinets on the list of things to do.
Thanks, so much, for sharing your photos. My tension is different, more like the pic in the manual. If I find more info of interest I will share.
I am off in a day or so, to the AQS Quilt show in Chattanooga TN. On the Way I am picking up what I think is a Wheeler and Wilson #8 Treadle.
Regards
I recently bought a complete Wilson Sewing Machine from 1871. It's in very good condition. Everything works and I have extra boat shuttles and feet/accessories. I would like to get a manual and any other information on this unique machine. Can anyone help me out? Thanks, Cheesehead
Cheeshead,
Would love to see your machine and accessories.
I will pass along the compressed manual I received. Send me your email address and I will return it with the manual. ( I do not know if CW has PM capability.)

If anyone sees or is selling the treadle table in the South East, please let me know.
We have a similar WG Wilson machine. It looks complete and has the boat shuttle and stand with cover. We will restore it. I would love to have a copy of the manual and any history of the machine. I have photos of it in its' current condition but I don't know where to post them.
send your request to me at mariagoetz@bellsouth.net
and I will send the pdf to your personal email. I only ask that you give me your first name.
I am not sure if Post An Item is the way to add pics or to start a new thread. Sorry I can't help there.
I know this is a long shot but would it be possible to still get a pdf manual for the W.G. Wilson rear treadle sewing machine? I would love to get this beauty going again. Thank you
Hi, SewingG-ma. :-)
You're quite right about your request being a long shot in the sense of getting a response here from any of the original participants in this post.
Although the email notification function of Collectors Weekly Show & Tell is working these days, none of the original users involved in this post seem to have been active here for years.
As you're probably found out, the link to the sewingmachinemuseum dot com website is defunct, and while the website itself is still there, most of the pages indicated that the site is under construction.
I take it that the manuals at the Smithsonian links were not helpful, and that you tried contacting user farmhousesewer at the provided email address?
Just for the record, here is a link for Worthpoint listing (with pictures) of what looks like the same machine:
*snip*
Early 1870's Wilson Transverse Shuttle Sewing Machine. W.G. Wilson began mfg. sewing machines in Cleveland O., later moving to Chicago where this machine was made. Like so many of the early machines, this machine had fairly elaborate hand painted decorations. This model was also adorned with the maker's portrait on the pillar and a picture of the factory on it's bed. Another feature peculiar to this model was the location of the hand wheel on the back side of the machine which caused the flywheel for the belt to be located across the back of the treadle frame instead of on the side. The Wilson S/M Co. was out of business before 1900. A boat shuttle and bobbin are present. This company should not be confused with the Wheeler & Wilson S/M Co.

This might be another long shot, but you could try the vintage sewing machine group on Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/VintageSewingMachines/
About that group:
https://www.stillstitching.com/2019/03/vintage-sewing-machines-on-facebook.html
There is a user there who maintains a very large library of vintage sewing machine manuals:

Good luck. :-)
Keramikos, thank you for the info. I will get busy doing some more research. Hopefully I'll have some luck.
Guess what... not a long shot. I am still here and get an email when this thread has any activity. Provide me your email address and I will send the manual. In the meanwhile, Ii was able to purchase a full treadle with head and bonnet form my collector thread. Have not worked on it yet, but am happy!
correction- from a collector friend. ... I never said I could type!
farmhousesewer, Excellent. :-) Happy Thanksgiving.
