    I enjoy acquiring interesting images to display with my early wood & brass camera collection. This beautiful stereoview is of an eagle posed proudly over a 35-star American flag. I assume the unknown photographer used a 'stuffed' eagle because it could remain motionless long enough for an exposure lasting many seconds. Then again, you never know.

    The 35-star flag became official on July 4th, 1863 when a star was added for the admission of West Virginia on June 20th, 1863. The flag lasted two years until July 3rd, 1865 when Nevada was admitted. Two presidents served during the time of this flag; Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.

    This painstakingly hand tinted image probably dates a little later than the flag - although I would like to think the image was made in the 1860s, it is more than likely early 1870s.

    Also shown is an example of the style of camera capable of making this stereoview; in this case I paired an 1860s camera made by John Stock with the stereoview.
