This painting was sitting in my grandfathers garage and it was given to my husband when my grandfather passed away. It is signed Norman Wilkinson. That is all I know about the painting. There is a ship in the foreground and a ship in the background. The ship in the background looks like it's sinking. If anyone knows anything about this painting please let me know. Thanks!

Sorry about the crappy pics, all I have have is my cellphone camera and it doesn't take the best pics.

Google Norman Wilkinson and you will find a wealth of information. I did not see that exact painting so it would be cool if you have an original! Very famous.

I did google him a while back, but can't find anything about this painting. Would be very cool if it's an original! Even if it's not, it was my grandpas, so I'll still love it just the same. :) Thanks!

      Norman Wilkinson, 1878-1971, marine painter.
Norman's greatest love was painting, his subjects were seascape and landscape in both oil and watercolour.
His early career as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News enabled him to develop his talents as both artist and entrepreneur.
Norman made a notable contribution to WW1 with the invention and development of Dazzle Painting, a form of ship camouflage.
During WW2 he painted a record of the major sea battles and presented the series of 54 paintings to the Nation. They are kept at the National Maritime Museum.
Norman's commercial work included the production of many illustrated books and he initiated a revival in poster painting for LMS Railways.
His works are held in both public and private collections.

Are you sure this is a painting or is it a Print?

Its a painting, but it doesn't feel as if it was done on a traditional canvas. The canvas typically has a little give, I think, but this one seems more stiff. It's a pretty big piece. Thanks for the info!

Also... there seems to be condition problems. There are some small cracks in a few spots. You can't tell from my pictures, but the painting is kinda shiny. I don't know if that info helps at all.

It's a wonderful painting and you are very fortunate to have saved it. Have you found out anything further about it's condition or any restoration techneques to bring it back?
