This is an interesting set for a number of reasons. It is quite old. I dated it using the backstamp, which evolved over time as Terras became more famous as a photographer. There is a photo of the Duchess of Balfour with the same backstamp dated 1874, so these are from the same period. This is a mum and her very chunky little son. I am fascinated by the magazine he is carrying - the front says "Good From Evil" and the back has ads that also date from this period. The outfit on the little guy is outrageous. I love platinographs because they are so clear even after so many years - no sepia toning, no degradation like you would likely see in most gelatin silver photos. More than that there is an incredible depth and reality to the photos of this type. Terras was from Fife, and had his studio there for many years. He specialized in platinographs up until the turn of the century when the cost of platinum started to go up and push this method out of existence until it resurged in the art world about 30 years ago. These are CDVs.
It's always nice to see multiple images from a single photo session. Please post the backstamp.
That's a great set of old photos, the hat is outrageous!
I love old photos! This one is particularly interesting. Thanks for posting.
Thanks so much for the comments and loves rniederman, walksoftly, cindyjune and mustangtony. I did post the backstamp and two closeup photos of the neat little book that the boy is holding.......but they have been removed. I guess it is OK to post 4 vases together but not 4 photos......maybe these constitute my 4 images even though this is a composite image......I guess the Collectors Weekly police are watching me.....I will post the rest in another posting.
