This decanter belongs to the STAR series that Tamara Aladin designed in 1963. It is very special with its red ball stopper and also because of the tiny bubbles texture, but this was the cause this series was produced for a very short period of time: mixing glass and soda to create bubbles proved difficult to produce, as the bubbles made by the soda in the glass varied too much in size and the different pieces wouldn't be of even quality.
I got this set from Finland, and the very best thing about it is that I just bought thew decanter and when opened the package found the two glasses as an extra gift from the seller. Wasn't he sweet? :)
Thanks Bellin! Also thanks to Greatsnowyowl!
You certainly lucked in with the glasses, austro!
Wonderful stopper and just love the set!
Amazing. Very beautiful. And the first time I see it. Where do you know its history from?
from he RIIHIMÄEN LASIA book , of course! It's become my glass byble about the factory and Tamara Aladin :)
Dear austro,
this one?

Does it exist in English? Or is your Finnish sufficient to read it?
That one! ;) It is a bilingual book. Otherwise I'd be unable to understand a thing :D
Could you please speak to us on the peculiar 'finish' of the glass fabric itself? (No pun intended here! :) Thank you!
The decanter and glasses, not the stopper, all totally covered in bubles. You can feel them when touching the inside of the glasses, but not when you touch the outside surface... I guess another layer of glass was added although I'm familar with the glass process so I am not sure how it could be done.
Looking at all the other bubble glass I've got (Sargasso by Kaj Franck and that of Erik Höglund), all bubbles are pretty irreglar in shape and size. It doesn't happen in Tamara Aladin's Star series. My guess is that they rejected every item with an irregular texture... imagino how expensive it can be to a factory!
So, you possess a beautiful error of evolution.
Thanks much, austrohungaro!!! I thought it looked like a rather novel finish. : )
Well... not an error of evolution. In case of being an error the ones to blame would be Tamara Aladin herself and above all the factory which put into prodution something that proved too expensive and difficult... In this case I'd say I possess a survivor. or one of the chosen few :)
@austrohungaro. You are right. And I would be happy to find another one!
A superb set, love the shape and the contrast between the bold red stopper and the bubbled textured skin.
Thanks vlkma! I think that's the most striking thing of all in this set, even if the red stoppers are to be found just on the decanters' stoppers. There are other pieces (such as a lidded jar) that only use the textured clear surface.
It's like they are always filled with champagne! And a cherry on top!
LOL, that's a nice way to see it, Amber :)
Thanks for your love MARTY and HO2CULTCHA!!!
